Mission of the University of Turin to Costigliole Saluzzo
Southern outskirts of the modern center
The site, affected by the mission's systematic investigations starting from 2003 (under the MiBACT concession), represents today the most extensive and widely explored rural settlement from the Roman period in the Piedmont area.
Research has brought to light a large rustic villa which developed between the 1st and 3rd centuries. A.D. The complex consists of a central building, extending over almost 5000 square meters, and at least three further buildings.
The systematic investigation made it possible, on the basis of the study of the plan, the functional preparations and the abundant mobile finds, to determine the function of the various sectors.
After an extensive fire dating back to the last decades of the third century. AD, the area is affected by a new presence during the centuries. IV-V A.D.
Interdisciplinary collaborations involve various departments of the University and Polytechnic of Turin and other universities, in the fields of archaeometric, geological, botanical, geognostic, etc.
The site hosts numerous Public Engagement activities, including site visits, and is part of the cross-border project Interreg Alcotra TRA [ce] S. Transmettre la recherche archéologique dans les Alpes du Sud.
